There are many small and unique shops just waiting to be found in Møgeltønder, with everything from old furniture to new paintings. The church at the beginning of the cobbled Slotsgaden is also worth a visit, not only just because Prince Joachim and Princess Marie got married there but also because the church is unusually large, beautiful and untraditional village-church. The biggest attraction is undoubtably Schackenborg Castle where Prince Joachim lived with his family until July 1st 2014. Here it got passed on the Schackenborg Fonden. During the summer it is possible to visit the castle´s garden on one of the guided tours.
The area around Møgeltønder is characterized by the surrounding fields, salty marshes and the unique Wadden Sea which now is part of the Unesco World Heritage Site. Here you can gather your own fresh oysters, drive to Højer Sluse and see the stormsurge pole, a silent witness of the storms from the past couple of hundred years, or you can drive to the island of Rømø with its wide sandy beaches, perfect for a day at the beach.
The town of Tønder is our nearest neighbour and offers a lively town-environment with charming old timbered houses, framed windows and cosy shops, amongst other “The Old Farmacy” with its year-round christmas exhibition, and the Water-tower offering an exhibition of Wagner-chairs and a stunning view over the town. Should you have experienced enough culture you can also go for a ride on horseback, swing a golfclub in one of the areas many golf clubs or just dream yourself away to the time when knights roamed Trøjborg or the golden horns where made by Gallehus.
Just on the other side of Tønder lies the border to Germany where there are lots of opportinuties to go shopping og just stroll down the pedestrian street in the harbourcity of Flensburg. A little further away you can find Denmarks oldest town of Ribe with its landmark the cathedral, visible from far away, the maritime city of Esbjerg with the longest pedestrian walk in Denmark and a wide variety of museums, Kolding with is large selection of culture and Sønderborg and Aabenraa situated in beautiful nature. If you wish to spend some fun hours with your family Legoland, Danfoss Universe and Givskud Lionpark are recommended and within 2 hours of driving.
At least once in a lifetime you should experience “Black Sun“, a natural phenomenon where up to 1 million starlings gather during sunset and dance in beautifull everchanging formations before going down for the night – and if your are lucky you can see the flock spreading in order to avoid being eaten by a sparrowhawk. You can experience black sun every spring and fall although fall is much more spectacular than spring. It is also in these laste fall-months that you can experience “grey sun”, where thousands of geese gather in the Wadden Sea area to fill up their fat-deposits before flying down south.
